The Towards 2050 plan is our district’s long-term vision to grow our economy and community, while ensuring that everyone feels supported, connected, and valued. Whether you’ve lived here for years or are new to the area, your input is essential in creating a plan that works for all of us.

Why Now?

The need for a forward-thinking plan for Timaru became clear as we began to explore the district’s potential. Our initial findings centered on the key drivers of economic growth—such as infrastructure, workforce, and economic performance—but we quickly recognized that a successful future isn’t just about numbers. A truly prosperous community is one where every individual’s well-being is prioritized.

Our approach to planning has evolved to embrace a more holistic vision that includes not only economic development, but also social, cultural, and environmental factors that contribute to quality of life. We know that sustainability, inclusivity, and a sense of belonging are just as crucial to our success as economic growth. This is why Towards 2050 is a living, collaborative effort, shaped by the diverse voices of everyone who calls Timaru home.

The Towards 2050 plan is about more than just infrastructure or workforce development - it’s about building a community where everyone can thrive. From creating meaningful career opportunities and expanding local businesses to fostering social cohesion and environmental sustainability, this plan is designed to support every resident in Timaru.

The future we envision is one that’s inclusive, where all residents have opportunities to contribute to the development of the region. It’s about embracing change, learning from one another, and working together to create a place that is prosperous, equitable, and innovative.

Your Feedback

Since launching the survey in October last year, we’ve heard from more than 300 individuals and organisations through surveys, consultations, workshops, and forums. All of that feedback has now been brought together to create the first draft of the plan, which is currently with Timaru District Council for initial review.

While we're not gathering further input just yet, the journey is far from over. Once the Council has reviewed the draft, we’ll post it on our website for the next round of community feedback, so you'll have another opportunity to help shape Timaru’s future.
