Theatre Royal upgrade could jump-start focus on cultural hub for Timaru

There is a chance the Theatre Royal in Timaru could be redeveloped into something akin to a multi-use cultural hub even after its $7 million upgrade is reconsidered. It could be extended on to surrounding, council-owned land and developed into a multi-purpose centre supplemented by additional facilities, Mayor Damon Odey said.

Art gallery and museum space could also be part of plans to reinforce that part of Stafford St as a "jewel in the community", he suggested on Monday night. "If we are going to to this, we are going to do it right," Odey said at a public meeting called to discuss the future of the theatre.
