More than 2000 new homes needed in Timaru to cope with future population demand

The Timaru District will need more than 2000 homes to cope with an additional 3000 people over the next 30 years, a just-released report reveals.

Population growth is going to put pressure on community services and require greater housing options for people, particularly the ageing population, according to the new draft Growth Management Strategy released by the Timaru District Council.

Experts say the district will experience moderate population growth, but even that growth will present challenges that need to be planned for. The draft strategy, a 30-year plan to respond to growth pressures and changing demographics in Timaru, was released by the council for public consultation on Thursday.
