‘Encouraging signs’: Is the Riviera of the South re-emerging as a tourism hotspot?

Timaru’s status as a popular beachside destination earned the title of the Riveria of the South in the early 20th century, and latest economic data a century later shows Timaru’s popularity with tourists is once again on the up.
Infometrics figures for the March quarter show tourism was a significant contributor to the district’s economy with visitors spending $469.3 million in the year to March, an increase of 11.6% on the same time last year.
Nationally, there was an 11.5% increase in tourism spending in the year to March, the economic consultancy’s report said.
