‘A pretty solid spot’: Principal economist says Timaru has ‘a lot of opportunity’

As global uncertainty continues and Kiwis stare down the barrel of fuel shortages, higher inflation and business failures, an economist says the Timaru District still has plenty to feel positive about.

Timaru’s advantage over similar-sized districts is in its variety and spread of industries, and there is “a lot of opportunity’’ to be even better, a leading economist says.

Visiting the town on Wednesday to speak at a Venture Timaru breakfast, Infometrics chief executive and principal economist Brad Olsen said that spread of activity across sectors meant when certain industries were finding it tough, the “others are sort of just keeping things going’’.
